Situated on the western bank of the River Demerara, near the town of the same name established by Dutch settlers in 1752, it represents the legacy of centuries of craftsmanship. However, the history of Uitvlugt rum is even more diverse.

Like many distilleries in Guyana, Uitvlugt was nationalized in 1979 and became part of Demerara Distillers Ltd. However, in 1999, the distillery ceased its operations, marking the end of an era. During its active years, Uitvlugt employed various stills to produce distinctive rums. In Uitvlugt was home to a Coffey still, a Versailles wood single pot still following the closure of Enmore distillery in 1994, and a double pot still, also crafted from wood, which currently resides at Port Mourant distillery.

Following the closure of Uitvlugt, all the valuable distillation equipment was relocated to Diamond distillery, the sole functioning distillery in the country. This ensured the preservation of the traditional methods and techniques that have made Guyanese rums so revered. The legacy of Uitvlugt lives on through the exceptional rums produced during its operational years.

Today, enthusiasts and collectors appreciate the significance of Uitvlugt rum, as they represent a bygone era of Guyanese rum production. The distinctive bottles and the historical significance associated with Uitvlugt rums make them highly sought after by connoisseurs around the world.
