A Japanese whisky distillery

Karuizawa whisky, crafted by the distillery founded in 1955 near Mount Asama in Miyota, Japan, became a rare and highly coveted collector’s item following the distillery’s closure in 2001. Initially, the company produced not only alcoholic beverages but also pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Suzuki Chuji, the second son of the Ajinomoto brand founder, started with soybean cultivation and established Showa Brewing Corp. in 1934, which was later renamed Miraku Breweries Corp. in 1949. The Karuizawa distillery, opened six years later, initially used Scottish barley and sherry casks for their whisky production.
