Karuizawa 1984 – Cocktail Series | Sherry Cask #7975 | LMDW
An exceptional single cask from Japan’s most mythical lost distillery, this Karuizawa 1984 forms part of the coveted Cocktail Series, bottled exclusively for La Maison du Whisky. Distilled in 1984 and matured in a single sherry cask (#7975), this release exemplifies the profound depth and intensity that defined Karuizawa’s sherry-led house style and cemented its legendary status among collectors.
Bottled at an imposing 59.3% ABV, this whisky reflects the distillery’s uncompromising production philosophy: small stills, long fermentations, and maturation in a demanding volcanic climate at the foot of Mount Asama. Sherry casks were central to Karuizawa’s identity, lending structure, concentration, and remarkable longevity to its spirit. Within the Cocktail Series, these bottlings are especially prized for presenting distinctive single casks paired with striking artistic presentation, celebrating both individuality and craftsmanship.
With the distillery closed in 2000 and dismantled soon after, each remaining Karuizawa release represents a finite and irreplaceable piece of whisky history. This 1984 sherry cask bottling stands as a powerful testament to a distillery whose influence far outlived its short production life, and whose whiskies continue to define the pinnacle of Japanese single malt.

About the Distillery
Founded in 1955 at the foothills of Mount Asama, Karuizawa Distillery operated until 2000 before being permanently closed and later dismantled. Inspired by the model of Macallan, Karuizawa used small stills, 100% Scottish barley, and heavily seasoned sherry casks to produce dense, powerful whiskies built for long ageing. Its unique microclimate - marked by volcanic soils, mist, and dramatic temperature shifts - contributed to unusually concentrated spirit. Today, Karuizawa is regarded as one of the most legendary lost distilleries in the world, with its remaining bottlings commanding reverence among collectors and connoisseurs alike.
