The Clément estate was founded in 1887 when Homère Clément acquired 43 acres from Domaine de L’Acajou. As the Martinique sugar trade declined, Homère championed the use of surplus sugarcane for agricole rum production. The distillery stayed in the family for 100 years until financial difficulties in 1987 led to its sale to Bernard Hayot, who moved production to the Le Simon distillery in 1989. Today, Clément rum is still matured at the original estate, now also home to a modern art gallery and outdoor museum.
