A rare treasure from the legendary Hanyu Distillery, this single malt was distilled in 1988 and bottled two decades later in 2008 as part of the Single Nippon Malt Whisky series. Drawn from a single “Nice Butt” cask (#9307), it reflects the singular style that has made Hanyu one of Japan’s most celebrated - and now vanished - whisky producers.

Bottled at 55% ABV, this release captures the distillery’s hallmark character: elegant yet powerful, weaving together layers of dried fruits, spice, oak richness, and subtle oriental undertones. With only 534 bottles produced, it remains a highly sought-after expression of Japan’s golden whisky era.

About the Distillery

Founded in 1941 by the Akuto family, the Hanyu Distillery became a cornerstone of Japanese whisky innovation. Known for its traditional pot stills and use of diverse cask types, Hanyu produced complex malts that balanced elegance with bold character. Though the distillery ceased operations in 2000, its remaining stock gave rise to some of Japan’s most iconic and collectible bottlings.
