The prestigious Rare Malts series
Port Ellen is one of the biggest casualties of the whisky market crisis in the early 1980s. The distillery operated from 1825-1929 and 1967-1983, and at the time of its closure, it was the smallest of the three DCL plants on Islay. Port Ellen single malt was included twice in the prestigious Rare Malts series, with this particular bottle being the first release in 1998, distilled in 1978.
