In 1605, English settlers attempted to establish a colony on St. Lucia but were mostly killed or driven off by local Caribs and disease. Over the centuries, the island changed hands between the French and British, with St. Lucia Distillers emerging as a key rum producer. 

In 1998, the Barnard family modernized the distillery with new pot stills, enhancing their rum production, and later sold their remaining shares in 2005. Renegade Saint Lucia Rum 1999 10yr 46% is one of the rums that has survived to the present day and was then bottled.
