The Hanyu distillery, founded in 1941 by Isouji Akuto, stands as a testament to the rich history and craftsmanship of Japanese whisky. Descending from a lineage of sake producers, Akuto embarked on a new journey, dedicating himself to the art of distillation. Sadly, in 2000, the Hanyu distillery closed its doors, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional whiskies. However, whisky enthusiasts can rejoice, as Sasanokawa Shuzo, a renowned company from northern Japan, stepped in to preserve Hanyu's legacy. They acquired all the remaining stocks and distilling equipment, ensuring that Hanyu's precious whisky would continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.

The revived Hanyu Distillery, with the support of a successful crowdfunding campaign that captured the interest of Japanese whisky enthusiasts worldwide, was relaunched in 2021. Thanks to the efforts of Toa Shuzo, a prominent drinks company, the distillery has the potential to become a captivating tourist attraction in Saitama, known as the "Land of Color."
